Are We There Yet? When Will We Reopen?

The truth is we don’t exactly know when we’ll reopen. The City of Staunton’s official statement yesterday says this:

The city remains subject to a temporary stay at home order issued by Governor Ralph Northam on March 30, 2020 that will remain in force until June 10, 2020, unless extended or rescinded by further executive order.  This stay at home order, together with other executive orders issued by the governor, will continue to guide the city in its decisions concerning operating protocols until further direction is received from the federal and state governments.

In other words, the city doesn’t know either!

While we wait, Total Defense continues to put out short instructional videos on boxing, FMA, and BJJ on its Facebook group. If you’re interested in training with us, please send us a request there to join up.

As soon as we receive guidance about when we can safely reopen on a limited or full basis, we will post here to let you know. Stay safe, and keep training!

Study at Home with TDMA Videos

We are delighted to announce that we have put together a system to continue providing daily video lessons to our students via the TDMA Private Facebook Page. If you are not a member of our Private Facebook Page, please let us know, and we will be happy to add you so you won’t miss any of the lessons. Click here to join.

Here is the weekly lesson schedule:

Monday – BJJ
Tuesday – FMA
Wednesday – Boxing
Thursday – BJJ
Friday – FMA

Even if you do not train in all of the programs, feel free to take advantage of all the lessons taught! A little cross training never hurt anyone! As always, if you have any questions, comments, or feedback, please let us know! Thanks for hanging in with us during these unprecedented times. We are family, and even though we are apart, we are still together. Continue training, and stay safe everyone!

Governor Orders Virginia Gyms Closed until April 23

Governor Ralph Northam yesterday ordered the statewide closure of certain “non-essential” business in an effort to contain the COVID-19 outbreak. Here is an excerpt from his official statement:

This order goes into effect at 11:59 PM on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 and will remain in place until 11:59 PM on Thursday, April 23, 2020. …

Recreation and Entertainment Businesses
The following recreation and entertainment businesses are considered non-essential and must close to the public beginning at 11:59 PM on Tuesday, March 24, 2020:…

• Fitness centers, gymnasiums, recreation centers, indoor sports facilities, indoor exercise facilities;

Unfortunately, this includes us. While this is sad news, TMDA is committed to doing what’s necessary to safeguard the lives of our members and community.

During the hiatus, please monitor our private Facebook group for instructional videos about things you can do at home. We’ve already posted several FMA drills and some BJJ information.

We will keep you informed as of developments and look forward to (hopefully) seeing you again at the school in late April.

Stay safe!

Gym Remains Closed, But We’re Still in Business

As promised on the 12th, here is an update about our status.

To keep our members safe, Total Defense Martial Arts remains closed. We hope to open up sometime in April once the authorities have given the all clear, but only time will tell.

If you haven’t already corresponded with Brian Rose about your membership fees, please contact him for an important update.

While we’re out, we encourage you to maintain your fitness at home through cardiovascular and strength training. You should also continue training your chosen martial art through drilling and study. A number of luminary BJJ instructors are offering deep discounts on their online training programs, and of course there are many excellent books out there.

If you’re a member of the TDMA community, please join our private Facebook group. Besides all the hilarious BJJ memes proliferating right now, our instructors are posting short videos of drills for you to do at home.

Classes Cancelled for Minimum of 1 Week Due to COVID-19 Risk

Out of an abundance of caution, all Total Defense Martial Arts classes are cancelled for a minimum of one week in an effort to protect our students and their families from COVID-19 infection. This temporary hiatus is effective immediately.

We will update you on Friday, March 20, about any further schedule disruptions if they are necessary.

Accordingly, the Women’s Self-Defense Seminar with Kristen DeBruycker on Sunday, March 15, is cancelled. All ticket purchases will be refunded.

Questions? Contact Brian Rose.

We really regret having to do this, but as we have stated, the health and safety of our members and community are our primary concerns. Our parent school, Hybrid Martial Arts in Roanoke, VA, had this eloquent statement when they announced their own class cancellations today:

COVID-19 Policy

Total Defense Martial Arts is monitoring the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic and is committed to preserving the health and safety of its students.

We are coordinating with our parent school, Hybrid Martial Arts, and are monitoring the advice and recommendations of the local governments in Staunton and Augusta County. We will advise of any schedule changes via our website, Facebook feed, bulletin board, and in-class announcements.

If you feel sick, have a cough, stuffy nose, fever, or other symptoms, please stay home until you fully recover. We will be cleaning the doors, door knobs, sinks, counters, and mats daily. If you use any of our boxing equipment, please clean the equipment before and after use. Thank you.
